Republic Property Trust went public in December, selling 20 million shares at $12 each. Its loss for the fourth quarter of 2005 was $14.4 million, compared with a profit of $419,000 for the same period in 2004, a development that the company attributed to the expenses associated with becoming a publicly traded company.
Republic has been expanding its Washington area holdings in recent years, to nearly 2 million rentable square feet by the end of 2005 from 1.1 million in 2004. The firm added another 250,000 square feet of rental space in Fairfax with an announcement in March of this year that it will acquire two buildings in an office complex for $66 million. Republic's tenants include law firms and tech firms such as Internet registrar Network Solutions. About a quarter of the company's office space is leased by U.S. government agencies.
