SRA International hit new highs in revenue and contract awards through work on information technology projects for the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Navy's Military Sealift Command and other agencies.
To handle the work, the company hired almost 1,300 new employees.
Helping to fuel SRA's growth were two significant acquisitions. In July, the company completed the purchase of Galaxy Scientific Corp., a firm specializing in systems engineering, information technology and tactical communications services and solutions. Galaxy sells services to the Defense Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Aviation Administration.
In November, SRA said it had acquired Spectrum Solutions Group Inc., another information technology contractor. Started in 2002, Spectrum has clients that include DHS and the Department of Health and Human Services.
The company reported revenue of $882 million in fiscal 2005, up 43 percent over the previous year. Profit rose 48 percent to $57.7 million, it reported.
In a statement in February of this year, Chairman Ernst Volgenau and president and chief executive Renato A. DiPentima said the company "set new records for revenue, net income, contract awards and diluted earnings per share."
But the company ran into trouble a few months later. In April, the company's stock fell after it warned its third-quarter profit would fall short of forecasts as it spent more to prepare bids and proposals.
