The company has had a strong year, with increased student enrollment and the opening of additional campuses.
Strayer's future seems bright as increasing numbers of companies require employees to have college degrees.
In its fourth quarter, Strayer reported profit of $15 million, up from $13.3 million in the year-earlier period. Higher enrollment is largely fueling that increase, said Robert S. Silberman, Strayer's chairman and chief executive. During its fall 2005 term, the school had 27,000 students, up from 23,000 in same period of 2004. A majority of those new students are adults working part time while pursuing their bachelor's or master's degrees in business.
"The economy is shifting from a manufacturing base to more of a service and technology base," Silberman said. "Across the economy as a whole, the earnings premium for a college degree is going up and the value of a high school degree is going down."
Strayer opened five campuses in 2005 and four this year; two of its newest opened in Pittsburgh this spring. Last year, Strayer had 35 campuses. By the end of 2006, Silberman said, the school plans to have 43 campuses. Strayer operates schools mostly in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast. It has campuses in the District, Maryland and Virginia.
About 15 percent of Strayer students take classes via the Internet, up from 10 percent a year ago. Many of those students are active-duty military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
