American Capital continued to grow in 2006. As of the end of the year, its total portfolio of investments under management stood at $9.8 billion, almost double the amount from the previous year. In October, the company announced that it had raised a $1 billion private-equity fund, American Capital Equity I.
The company made 168 investment transactions in the year totaling $6.7 billion. Among them was an $85 million investment in ASAlliances Biofuels, which plans to build three ethanol plants in the Midwest. In January 2007, American Capital invested $411 million in WIS International, a provider of outsourced inventory management services.
In February 2006, it opened a Boston office to expand investment in the technology sector. Since the beginning of this year, the company has twice offered its shares to the public, in part to fund investments.
