Among the company's big splashes last year was the sale of Advantage Sales & Marketing, which generated a gain of $434 million in March, as well as the completion of the sale of STS Operating for a profit of $94 million in May.
By year's end, Allied also made big news in its ongoing feud with hedge fund manager David Einhorn. In a September letter to Allied's board of directors, he had suggested that Allied may have broken into his personal records in a mode of corporate espionage called pretexting. Allied denied the allegation. But this February, the company acknowledged that someone it hired had obtained Einhorn's phone records. In a statement, Allied said then that it had received a subpoena from the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Columbia requesting records regarding the use of private investigators hired by the firm or its agents.
The revelations overshadowed what was otherwise a strong year for Allied. In 2006, it funded a record $2.4 billion in new private finance investments, resulting in a portfolio of $4.5 billion, up 25 percent from 2005. In 2006, the company also generated a record level of profitability, $722.5 million in combined net investment income and net realized gains, up 76 percent from 2005.
