CompuDyne spent much of 2006 working to reverse 2005 losses. Third-quarter earnings were up slightly, as costs of complying with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which mandates internal accounting controls, continued to drop.
In its business with prison security systems, contract awards are slowly increasing, and the firm's loss was smaller than in 2005 despite sharply lower revenue. In the field of attack protection, a major embassy contract ramped up significantly, boosting earnings. The firm's fiber-optic perimeter sensor business also picked up. In its public safety and justice sector, which includes computer-aided dispatch and court and records management systems, revenue rose in the third quarter.
In July 2006, the firm acquired Signami, a technology firm in Severna Park that produces signals-intelligence-gathering systems used by intelligence agencies in the United States and in 17 other countries.
In January 2007, CompuDyne launched a marketing campaign to sell one comprehensive package of security solutions in the homeland security marketplace. In February, board member J. Michael McConnell resigned to become director of national intelligence.
