CSC racked up a string of deals in the second quarter totaling $8.8 billion in contracts awards, the most it had ever lodged in a single quarter. Contract awards during the year included a deal with the Department of Homeland Security for information technology and services, and a $3.7 billion contract over nine years with Britain's National Health Service.
At the end of 2006, the company reported that since Oct. 1, its federal sector business unit had signed 110 previously unannounced contracts and subcontracts during CSC's fiscal 2007 third quarter. The company said the contracts, most of them with the Defense Department, had a total estimated value of as much as $643 million over the next 10 years.
To streamline operations, the company approved workforce cuts of 4,300 employees, most of them based in Europe.
Company officials had considered a possible sale early in the year as part of a plan to boost shareholder value, retaining Goldman Sachs as a financial adviser. Instead, the company's board of directors authorized the repurchase of $2 billion in common stock. In December, the company acquired Datatrac Information Services, which provides operations support, contact centers, secure document personalization and information technology. One Datatrac contract, valued at $150 million over five years, calls on the company to convert paper immigration records into digital form.
