Emergent BioSolutions went public in November, raising $52.4 million. Not long after, the federal government canceled a $877.5 million contract with VaxGen, which was supposed to have provided 75 million doses of a new-generation anthrax vaccine for the national stockpile.
The government has bought 10 million doses of Emergent's vaccine for the stockpile, but the cancellation of the VaxGen contract leaves a hole in the government's efforts against anthrax, one that Emergent would like to fill. The problem with Emergent's vaccine, however, is that it requires as many as six doses; the government wants fewer. So Emergent is testing a new version of the vaccine that uses an adjuvant, or additive, to help enhance the vaccine and speed its ability to boost immune response in the body.
