EagleBank started out as a publicly traded company with three branches in Montgomery County and has since added six branches, including three in the District.
The harsh banking environment pushed the bank's net interest margin — a key profit measure that is the difference between interest income and interest expense, divided by the bank's average earning assets — to 4.81 percent, down from 4.99 percent in 2005. Still, that was well above the average of 3.99 percent for peer banks, defined as those with $300 million to $2.5 billion in assets.
Despite the decline, EagleBank had a year of growth. Among community banks in the Washington metropolitan area, it continued to rank as one of the top Small Business Administration lenders.
It added its ninth branch on the Maryland side of the increasingly upscale shopping area of Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase in May 2006. And it created a new business unit that focuses on serving nonprofit organizations, which are plentiful in the greater Washington area.
It also established the Eagle Bancorp Foundation to benefit organizations involved in the fight against breast cancer.
