Goodwill derives income from 2,000 stores and an Internet auction site that sell donated clothes, computers and household items. It also contracts with the government and others to provide document-management and janitorial and food-preparation services.
Goodwill's auction site earned $10.5 million for the group's programs. That compares with more than $1.6 billion in revenue from retail operations reported for 2005.
The Labor Department awarded Goodwill a national grant of about $8 million to provide job training, work experience and job placement to more than 2,000 low-income workers aged 55 and older.
The Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families awarded three local Goodwill agencies nearly $5 million to promote responsible parenting and economic stability to low-income fathers in their communities.
