The past year or so was one of the most important periods in the company's 15-year history. HGS entered the last stage of human testing for two drugs. One of them, a treatment for lupus, could be the first new medication for the debilitating disease in more than 40 years. HGS has joined forces on the product with drug giant GlaxoSmithKline.
The other drug, a treatment for hepatitis C, allows patients to reduce the frequency of often debilitating treatments. Last year, HGS also signed an agreement to work on the drug's development and commercialization with Novartis.
HGS also took steps to narrow its focus on driving new drugs to market. The company spun off much of its research-and-development capabilities to two senior executives, who launched a new company, CoGenesys.
