While eBay is the dominant player in online auctions, Liquidity Services is an upstart looking for a piece of the action. Last fall, the company bought the wholesale unit of California-based STR for $10.1 million in cash, which added a 117,000-square-foot leased distribution center on the West Coast with the goal of expanding LSI's presence in the region. LSI officials said the STR deal would add about $480,000 in profit for fiscal 2007. Management has been able to handle such growth so far, and analysts are bullish on the company's growth prospects.
A contract awarded last February for the sale of select Defense Department surplus assets in Germany will help. The three-year contract covers the sale of all military surplus vehicles and vehicular parts, components and equipment in Germany, as well as all miscellaneous equipment and supplies.
LSI holds contracts with large sellers in Europe such as the British Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Defense Department in Britain and Germany.
Last July, the company expanded its global presence by launching LiquiBiz.com, an online European auction marketplace.
