USA Mobility has about 60 percent of the nation's paging market and does business with more than 80 percent of Fortune 1000 companies. But the market is shrinking; company revenue was $497.7 million in 2006, down from $618.6 million the year before. The company has been trying to branch out from traditional paging and messaging to other wireless services, such as phones, e-mail and other data applications.
As its subscriber base shrinks, USA Mobility has decided to focus on large customers in business, government, health care and emergency response. The company has been trying to get new customers from crisis management sectors in the federal government; its pitch is that pagers are cheaper and more reliable than other technologies, such as BlackBerrys or cellphones, in a crisis.
