Nearly 5,000 physicians are affiliated with MedStar's services. It serves a half-million patients each year. In addition to hospitals, the organization also runs assisted-living facilities, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. John P. McDaniel announced in October that he will retire as chief executive on Jan. 1, 2008. Kenneth A. Samet, MedStar's president and chief operating officer, is to take his place. McDaniel will continue with the organization as chairman and president of the MedStar Health Foundation.
MedStar partnered with Microsoft in July to further develop a new software system so caregivers can quickly access patient information, including ultrasound images, EKGs and other scanned documents. The software was originally developed by doctors at Washington Hospital Center using Microsoft development tools.
In January, the organization appointed five members to its board: Chandralekha Banerjee, chief of infection control at Good Samaritan Hospital; Drew Berry, former vice president and general manager of WMAR-TV in Baltimore; Edwin F. Hale Sr., chairman of the board and chief executive of 1st Mariner Bank; Catherine Meloy, president and chief executive of Goodwill of Greater Washington; and Stuart F. Seides, associate director of cardiology at Washington Hospital Center and a former member of the hospital's board of directors.
