MicroStrategy held steady in 2006, posting reliable profit and revenue growth. The firm began selling low-cost packages of its business-reporting software products in April. In September, the company won an appeal in a suit filed by Business Objects, which claimed that MicroStrategy infringed on its patent.
The company continued its effort to repurchase stock, which it had ramped up aggressively in 2005. In the third quarter of 2006, MicroStrategy repurchased 215,440 shares of its class A common stock for $19.2 million, or $88.89 per share. A repurchase reduces the total number of shares available, thereby improving the value of each remaining share. MicroStrategy's share price increased from about $95 to $114 in 2006. But some analysts have cautioned that the jump in stock price does not reflect the firm's relatively slow growth and have cited concerns about competition.
Profit rose 9 percent in 2006 from the year before. The firm rewarded itself by announcing plans in February 2007 to buy a $46 million luxury jet, including a cabin decked out with "24k polished gold, satin antique brass or equivalent" plated fixtures, according to the purchase contract MicroStrategy filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
This year, MicroStrategy announced a new "dashboard" product, which provides more animated and interactive features to display data for its customers.
