Industry: Telecommunications | Category: Public Companies

In 2006, NII Holdings' subscriber base expanded more rapidly than it had the year before in the five countries where it operates: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru. For the year, it added more than 900,000 customers, most of them small and medium-size businesses, ending 2006 with 3.4 million.
In its earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2006, NII said it had extended the term of its supply agreement with Motorola and acquired the assets of Cosmofrecuencias in Mexico.
Tim Perrott, vice president for investor relations, said in an interview that the company's chief goal is to continue gaining subscribers in those five countries rather than launch operations in a new nation. (The company does not provide services in the United States.) He said NII sees the economic and political climates in the five countries as "very strong and improving."
