Over the past year, Northrop Grumman expanded its local presence, buying Essex of Columbia for $580 million and beginning work on a new information technology facility in Chantilly, which will eventually house 350 employees. The acquisition will expand the company's footprint in the classified intelligence world.
The company announced this year that it would join a competition for a $40 billion contract to build refueling tanker planes for the Air Force, setting up a two-way race between the Los Angeles weapons-maker and rival Boeing. The companies are competing to build 179 of the tankers, which refuel other planes in midair, over the next 15 years, and the winner would be in place to potentially build hundreds more.
Northrop also expanded its presence overseas and opened a corporate office in London. It won a competition to provide a version of its Global Hawk drone to Germany and another to provide mobile fingerprinting systems to Britain.
The company also suffered some setbacks last year. Northrop lost a high-stakes contract to build a new spaceship replacing NASA's shuttles to rival Lockheed Martin. It had been considered the front-runner in the competition. And one of the company's largest programs, Deepwater, a joint venture with Lockheed to modernize Coast Guard ships and planes, has faced criticism from Congress related to design flaws in some of the ships.
Northrop also remains in litigation with its insurance carriers over the cost of repairing three of the company's shipyards — two in Mississippi and one in Louisiana — that suffered $1 billion in damage due to Hurricane Katrina. The company has asked the Pentagon to help offset the cost.
