Industry: Telecommunications | Category: Public Companies

Once upon a time in the era now known as the telecom bubble, hundreds of upstart firms competed with old behemoths such as AT&T, MCI and the local Bell telephone companies in an industry being remade by the Internet. Most of the upstarts have long since exited: rolled up in mergers, liquidated, delisted and otherwise dismantled in the ugly bust that followed the boom. XO is one of the survivors, and it has been on an expansion spree.
In 2006, XO rolled out wireless high-speed Internet networks using antennas in Washington, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, San Diego, Tampa and Miami. It added Phoenix in March.
During the past year, the company announced the completion of a new high-speed network linking cities across the country. Telephone traffic carried over its network grew 80 percent during the year. In June 2006, the company tapped Robert E. Beran as chief executive for its broadband wireless subsidiary, Nextlink.
