Industry: Aerospace And Defense | Category: Public Companies

GeoEye was created in January 2006 when Orbimage Holdings, a Dulles-based satellite-imagery firm, acquired most of Denver-based Space Imaging's assets for $58.5 million, minus amounts Space Imaging paid on its existing debt. The combined company, doing business under the name GeoEye, is based in Dulles; it also has a processing facility in St. Louis and a ground station and production operation near Denver. The Pentagon's National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency is GeoEye's biggest customer. GeoEye also provides satellite imagery for Microsoft's and Yahoo's online mapping search engines. The company said it was preparing its next-generation satellite, GeoEye-1, which it said will be the world's highest-resolution commercial imaging satellite, designed to take images of the Earth from 425 miles in space and be able to discern and map objects on the planet's surface that are as small as about 16 inches.
In April 2006, GeoEye said it would restate results for the quarters ended June 30 and Sept. 30, 2005, because it had improperly accounted for derivative financial instruments. It did not estimate the size of the restatement. And in September, the company won approval to trade on the Nasdaq Global Market under a new ticker symbol: GEOY.
