The big news for this government contracting stalwart is its plunge into the public stock market. Owned since 1969 by its own employees — more than 43,000 of them last fall — SAIC went public in October with an offering of 75 million shares of common stock on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares rose on the first day of trading, giving the company more capital to acquire other firms and expand its operations. The IPO closed out a tougher-than-expected time for the company, which had delayed the offering for several months. SAIC acknowledged that it had a billing dispute with Greece over a contract to supply security at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. In April, the company said it had resolved the matter.
The company acquired several companies in the past year. They include Varec, which provides measurement, control and automation systems to the oil and gas, defense and aviation industries. In August, SAIC acquired Cornerstone Industry, which provides "joint doctrine development" — the fundamental principles that guide the employment of U.S. military forces.
Among the recent contracts awarded to SAIC is a deal in February with the Defense Department to provide process planning for the Joint Test and Evaluation Program Office. SAIC is one of four companies to secure that contract, which is worth $465 million over five years, with $93 million for each one-year option.
