Strayer opened eight campuses last year and plans to open another eight this year.
The school is actively pursuing a growth strategy it began in 2001; more than half of the school's campuses are less than five years old.
The for-profit school has been in Washington for more than 100 years, and Strayer has its strongest presence in the mid-Atlantic. Recent new campuses in states such as Kentucky and Florida have helped the school bolster its presence outside the region.
Strayer had 31,000 students in its 2006 fall term, up from 27,000 in the fall term of 2005 and 23,000 in the same term in 2004. Almost all of the school's classes are now offered online, according to Strayer's chairman and chief executive, Robert S. Silberman. During the fall 2006 term, the school had more than 3,000 students out of range of its campuses taking classes exclusively via the Web.
Profit has also been rising for the school. Strayer had earnings of $52 million in 2006, up from $48 million the year before.
