Early in 2006, Argon ST won two major Navy contracts — a $45.5 million contract in March and a $52.8 million contract in April — to develop sensor systems. With options, the latter deal could grow to $598 million through 2013. But the contract wins were partly offset in May when Argon said delayed contracts ate into second-quarter profit, which fell 9 percent.
In July, Argon completed its acquisition of the San Diego Research Center and Innovative Research, Ideas and Services Corp., two small firms that it said complemented its customer base and technologies. A month later, Argon reported a 12 percent drop in third-quarter profit because of the delayed contracts. Revenue for the period fell 9 percent.
In the fall, Argon won two more Navy contracts: a five-year, $9.9 million deal in October to furnish specialized engineering support for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Va., and a $17.7 million contract in November for research and development and production of a surface ship torpedo defense program.
Argon was named a government contractor of the year in 2006 by the Northern Virginia Government Contractors Council, the Professional Services Council and Washington Technology.
