About Vocus Inc.

4296 Forbes Blvd., Lanham, Md. 20706

Industry: Information Technology | Category: Public Companies

After its debut on the Nasdaq stock market in December 2005, Vocus's revenue rose 44 percent in a year after an aggressive push to hire salespeople and expand its client base.
The company provides on-demand corporate communications services over the Internet. Its products include a database with information on 800,000 journalists, government officials and analysts. It also offers applications that handle e-mail campaigns and monitor news services.
Last year, the company acquired PRWeb and signed nearly 350 new subscription agreements, bringing its client base to about 1,700. Among its clients are Amnesty International, BMW Group, Canon USA, Cars.com, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Discover Financial Services, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Financial Times, Kellogg, Newell Rubbermaid, the North Carolina Zoo, Travelers Indemnity and Waste Management.
The company's growth strategy is to continue to sign new clients, but a portion of its revenue comes from fees, such as per-transaction charges for press releases it issues for clients. Those fees were not significant last year; company officials said they intend to increase fees as a percentage of total revenue this year.
Vocus maintains several U.S. and international offices. In addition to its administrative headquarters in Lanham, it has a research division in College Park, an online press-release distribution service in Ferndale, Wash., and sales and service offices in Reston, London and Bangkok.
