Founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, the American Red Cross provides care to victims of war and natural disasters. Working through local chapters, it oversees blood drives and community services that help the needy, as well as programs that support military families. The organization has faced rapid turnover in leadership in recent years. Chief executive Mark W. Everson resigned in November after questions about an inappropriate relationship with a female subordinate.
