The federally funded CPB is the largest single source of financial support for public television and radio programming. It was created by Congress to protect public stations from political pressure, but it has not always been able to stay above the fray. Last year, after complaints by some members of Congress, the CPB arranged to distribute a conservative-produced TV documentary on Islam that PBS had rejected as unworthy.
