Friedman, Billings, Ramsey, Washington's home-grown investment bank, struggled over the past year, squeezed by the credit crunch. FBR bet $550 million on the subprime mortgage market a few years ago but saw most of that investment disappear. It liquidated a mortgage originator it had acquired that subsequently struggled. FBR, which is set up as a real estate investment trust for tax purposes, also spun out its better-performing investment bank, FBR Capital Markets.
