Fannie Mae owns or guarantees almost $3 trillion of mortgage-related investments, more than 20 percent of the U.S. total. The collapse of the housing bubble last year helped drive it to its first annual loss since 1985. But the company also turned the meltdown to its advantage. As the government sought its help easing the crisis, Fannie Mae was granted permission to operate with a thinner financial cushion and to take on larger loans.
