Changes in aid and admissions practices helped many top schools get a record number of applicants for the fall, including Georgetown University. The Jesuit school had 14,148 graduate and undergraduate students in fall 2007. In the past year, Georgetown signed men's basketball coach John Thompson III to a contract extension; hired Michael Eric Dyson, a commentator on African American culture; and joined six area hospitals and universities in an effort to turn research knowledge into health care.
