Stephen Joel Trachtenberg stepped down as the university's president in August after 19 years of pushing GW into the national consciousness, increasing applications and enrollment, buying up real estate and helping make it one of the most expensive schools in the country. Steven Knapp, an English literature scholar who had served as provost at Johns Hopkins University, was named GW's 16th president. The school's baseball team played the first game at Nationals Park. (It beat St. Joseph's 9-4.)
