Howard, founded in 1867 and now with 10,500 students, has long been considered the nation's most prestigious black university; an honorary doctorate last year to commencement speaker Oprah Winfrey brought tears to her eyes. In May, the university tapped Bowling Green State University President Sidney A. Ribeau to succeed H. Patrick Swygert as its 16th president. Ribeau, who is slated to take over on Aug. 1, was credited with raising low morale at Bowling Green, exceeding fundraising goals and creating model learning opportunities for students.
