In 2007, Orbital completed 25 years of making small satellites and rockets for telecommunications, scientific research in deep space and launching defense missiles. It began expanding its Dulles campus and launched its first interplanetary spacecraft on a eight-year, 3-billion-mile journey to an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. In February, NASA awarded Orbital a $170 million contract to develop a spaceship to fly cargo to the international space station.
