Few institutions so galvanize metropolitan Washington as the Redskins football franchise. The team is one of the biggest cash-generators in American sports. Last year, the Redskins finished at 9-7, good enough for a wild-card playoff spot; the team lost in the first round. After three disappointing seasons, head coach Joe Gibbs was replaced by Jim Zorn. A pall was cast over this season by the death of all-pro safety Sean Taylor in November after being shot in his Florida home.
