Giant Food, Washington's largest grocer, experienced turbulence at the top last year. Dutch parent company Royal Ahold installed John Rishton as chief executive, replacing Anders Moberg. Locally, industry veteran Robin Michel was appointed executive vice president and general manager of Washington- and Baltimore-area Giant stores. Ahold also completed its sale of food distributor U.S. Foodservice, based in Columbia, to private-equity firms Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts in July.
