The world's largest environmental group uses novel financing tools to buy or otherwise protect 117 million acres and 5,000 miles of rivers worldwide. Last year, the nonprofit Nature Conservancy brokered the largest debt-for-nature swap in history, persuading the U.S. government to forgive $26 million in debt in exchange for Costa Rica's protection of its tropical forests. The group also lost its president of seven years, Steven J. McCormick, who quit abruptly in October.
