The private-equity firm lost more than $3 billion in 2008 and defaulted on some loan agreements, leading its auditors to issue a "going concern" notice. It stopped paying a dividend in November, cut its workforce by a third and reduced bonuses by 93 percent. But American Capital, which owns stakes in a diverse collection of firms that make aircraft, children's apparel and special corks, said it was working with its lenders and called itself a "patient investor."
