With about $1.8 trillion in assets on its books, Citibank's parent company Citigroup is no longer the nation's largest bank. At risk of failure in late 2008, the federal government infused the parent company with $45 billion in bailout funds and agreed to serve as a backstop against losses on a pool of troubled loans exceeding $300 billion. In February, the government agreed to a deal that would raise its ownership stake to as much as 36 percent.
