The private-equity giant had more than $85.5 billion under management, 66 funds, and offices in 20 countries as of Dec. 31. The California Public Employees' Retirement System has a 5 percent stake in the firm, and an Abu Dhabi investment firm owns 7.5 percent. Carlyle sees opportunity in the recession to raise money to invest in troubled financial firms. But it too has been hit, saying in December that it would lay off 10 percent of its staff.
