The U.S. division of the Dutch grocery store operator runs more than 180 Giant supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District. It continues to meld the onetime local brand into a new Stop & Shop/Giant mold, with lower prices and smaller selection of brands. Last year, Ahold's Landover-based Giant Foods unit completed 33 store remodelings or replacements. Many of the new stores have customer-scanned checkouts to reduce labor costs.
