The owner of The Washington Post, the Kaplan education company, Cable One, TV stations, Newsweek, Slate and other publications posted its first operating loss in 37 years as a public company in the second quarter of 2008. The company also owns stakes in a news service and Bowater Mersey Paper. Kaplan now accounts for more than half of its parent company's revenue, posting a 15 percent gain in sales last year.
