Holland House Cocktail

The Washington Post, February 20, 2008
  • Course: Beverage
  • Features: Fast

Summary:

Though akin to the Aviation Cocktail, this drink traditionally calls for genever, the Dutch-style gin with a more full-flavored, maltier taste. If you can't find true genever such as Bols, Boomsma or Zuidam, a Dutch-style gin such as Damrak will give similar character. If you can't find those, it's still a nice enough drink with Tanqueray or Plymouth gin, though slightly less vermouth is recommended in that case.

1 serving

Ingredients:

  • Ice
  • 1 3/4 ounces gin, preferably oude genever
  • 3/4 ounce dry vermouth (if using Tanqueray or Plymouth gins, reduce vermouth to 1/2 ounce)
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 ounce maraschino liqueur
  • 1 lemon peel twist, for garnish

Directions:

Fill a mixing glass two-thirds full with ice. Add the gin, vermouth, lemon juice and maraschino liqueur. Stir vigorously, then strain into a cocktail (martini) glass. Garnish with the lemon twist.
