Provincial

The Washington Post, December 16, 2009
  • Course: Beverage
  • Features: Holiday (Christmas)

Summary:

This is the opposite of a Cosmopolitan: an inventive use of your homemade cranberry juice and candied Key limes that also is a complex, layered, balanced cocktail.

Spirits columnist Jason Wilson recommends seeking out rhum agricole and the Clement Creole Shrubb, but in a pinch you also could use a quality molasses-based rum such as Appleton V/X and a fine orange liqueur such as Cointreau.

1 serving

Ingredients:

  • Ice
  • 1 ounce rhum agricole, preferably Rhum Clement VSOP
  • 1/2 ounce orange liqueur, preferably Clement Creole Shrubb
  • 3 ounces Homemade Cranberry Juice (see related recipe)
  • 1/2 ounce Lime Syrup (see related recipe)
  • Squeeze of lemon wedge (about 1 teaspoon)
  • Slices of Candied Key Limes (see related recipe), for garnish

Directions:

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Combine the rhum agricole, orange liqueur, cranberry juice, lime syrup and squeeze of lemon juice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a chilled cocktail (martini) glass. Garnish with slices of candied key lime.
