Black and Blue Mojito

The Washington Post, May 25, 2011

Spirits

  • Course: Beverage
  • Features: Fast

Summary:

There are many mojito variations, and you can make one with almost any fresh fruit, but there's always something special about a drink made with fresh berries.

For the rum, author Kim Hassarud recommends 10 Cane. It is similar to rhum agricole, which is made from pressed sugar cane rather than molasses. Spirits columnnist Jason Wilson also recommends an aged white rum, such as Rhum Barbancourt or Banks 5 Island.

1 serving

Ingredients:

  • 4 blackberries, plus 1 for garnish
  • 10 blueberries, plus 1 for garnish
  • 10 mint leaves, plus 1 sprig for garnish
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 ounce simple syrup (see NOTE)
  • 2 ounces rhum agricole
  • Crushed ice
  • Soda water

Directions:

Muddle the berries, mint leaves, lime juice and simple syrup in a rocks or old-fashioned glass. Add the rhum agricole, then fill with the crushed ice. Top with a splash of soda water, then stir gently.

Garnish with the mint sprig and berries.

NOTE: To make simple syrup, combine 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a slow rolling boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 5 minutes. Transfer to a heatproof container and let cool to room temperature.
