Cheryl W. Thompson
Investigative
» Reporter |
Cheryl W. Thompson, a member of the investigations unit, came to The Post in 1997 and has written extensively about immigration, government and crime, including co-authoring a four-part series in 2000 on D.C. police homicide investigations that won honors including the National Association of Black Journalists’ enterprise award. The articles prompted city leaders to overhaul homicide investigations, including the creation of a criminal investigator’s training academy. Cheryl was part of the reporting team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting, and in 2005, she wrote a three-part series on the lack of oversight of physicians by state medical boards, which led to various reforms.
Most recently, she has reported on a Prince George’s County official who awarded millions of dollars in contracts to his friends, who did little or no work, and on government officials who charged thousands of dollars in personal expenses to their taxpayer-funded credit cards. The officials are under investigation by state and federal authorities.
A Chicago native, Cheryl has a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She also is an adjunct instructor at Georgetown University.
