Why should voters elect you?

"I am a consensus builder with a record of leadership on important community issues. I work hard to be open and accountable to district residents."

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"Our most critical issue is to maintain our quality of life while ensuring that people of all ages can afford to call Fairfax home. Traffic congestion is a major threat to our quality of life, and we must fund a complete range of transportation solutions. Slowing economic growth means we must redouble efforts to identify budget savings and focus on core services, including protecting funding for our schools and universities, public safety and environmental protection. I look forward to fully funding our mental health system and finding ways to make health care more affordable."

What is your plan to address the traffic problems in Virginia?

My first priority is to ensure that the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority spends public funding effectively, efficiently, and transparently. We must also increase our investment in traffic-reducing technology, including telecommuting, and continue to explore innovative financing such as public-private partnerships where there is a clear public benefit. While there is enormous focus on new construction, Virginia must do more to maintain our existing transportation system. Specifically, we must change the maintenance fund distribution formula that penalizes Northern Virginia because it does not reflect the higher volume on our roads. Finally, no amount of transportation funding can overcome poor land use planning and growth that exceeds our capacity to serve it with infrastructure. I will continue to fight to strengthen the ability of local governments to manage growth responsibility and to strengthen regional coordination and planning.

Do you think current policies governing growth & development in your area are too restrictive, not restrictive enough or just right?
