Why should voters elect you?
"It's been my privilege to be an effective advocate for my fellow citizens in the 37th District, and I will always honor their trust."
What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?
"During my tenure in the Senate, we've increased transportation spending from $6 billion to over $9 billion, and I have helped the communities in my district with traffic flow and safety improvements. I have also been endorsed by the Fairfax Coalition of Police because of my commitment to public safety. Bringing more education funds home from Richmond to Fairfax and removing the incentives for illegal immigration have also been top legislative priorities for me. I have also been an effective advocate for those with mental illnesses and disabilities, helping those who can't help themselves."
What is your plan to address the traffic problems in Virginia?
Reducing congestion and increasing public transit options is my top priority. I've worked to protect the transportation trust fund and use general fund revenue for overdue transportation projects. I voted to bring $400 million to Northern Virginia for new roads. This was a significant compromise and we still have much progress to make; however, much of this money will be spent right here in the 37th district. It was the best deal we could get this year. I also support the addition of high occupancy toll lanes and bus rapid transit to existing overcrowded roads. By working in partnership with the private sector, we have real options for congestion reduction. I have opposed red-light cameras because they can increase accidents. I also support investing funds in traffic light synchronization and smart signal technology to improve traffic flow. I opposed the abusive driver fees and will work for their repeal.
Do you think current policies governing growth & development in your area are too restrictive, not restrictive enough or just right?
