Why should voters elect you?
A lifelong resident of this area, I know my district, and I have fought effectively for my constituents for 15 years in the General Assembly.
What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?
The scarcity of affordable housing, which forces moderate-income families to live far from work. The General Assembly needs to give local governments more flexibility to fund workforce housing programs and provide better incentives for builders of affordable housing. It also causes overcrowded conditions and zoning violations in our neighborhoods. After two years of work, I got a bill passed this year that provides that people twice convicted of health and safety violations in a home they own within five years can receive jail time. Hopefully, this will help Fairfax County better enforce code violations.
What is your plan to address the traffic problems in Virginia?
First, we need to reform the transportation plan passed this year by getting rid of "abuser fees" and those provisions that will increase the cost of housing. We also need to pass a moderate increase in fuel taxes to provide more revenue dedicated to road and rail maintenance. We can also help to reduce air pollution by encouraging HOT lane construction and other ways to get cars moving instead of idling in traffic. Finally, we need to provide a greater proportion of funding for rail and mass transit projects around the Commonwealth.
Do you think current policies governing growth & development in your area are too restrictive, not restrictive enough or just right?
