Why should voters elect you?
"I have built a record of working diligently, with energy and experience, to improve educational opportunities for all children. I listen and act."
What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?
"Our greatest challenge is preparing students to succeed in the 21st century while meeting the narrow accountability goals of No Child Left Behind, in a time of increasing needs and declining resources. To do this, we must end our narrow focus on preparing students to take yearly standardized tests in English and math. Instead, we must move toward more meaningful measures of student achievement across a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills. We also must convince Congress and the General Assembly to pay for their unfunded mandates, which have grown to nearly $250 million, 10 percent of our annual budget."
What is your plan to address the traffic problems in Virginia?
The School Board has very little control over traffic. I will continue to encourage students and parents to use our bus transportation system, which gets students to school more safely and with less traffic congestion than having students and parents drive their private cars to school.
Do you think current policies governing growth & development in your area are too restrictive, not restrictive enough or just right?
