What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

The economy. We need to encourage job growth and increase global competitiveness by taking actions such as cutting the corporate tax rate which is the second highest in the world and drives companies away from our area. We also need to address the negative effects of government waste, earmarks, and subsidies which further damage our economy. For example, subsidies for ethanol and big agri-business drive up the cost of food.

Why should voters elect you?

Voters should support me because our economy is suffering due to Congress's disregard for fiscal responsibility and love of waste. I am running on a clear and consistent platform of limited government, fiscal responsibility, and personal freedoms which is what is needed to get America back on track. I am able to provide real and practical solutions to the issues we face, including creating affordable healthcare and protecting the environment.

By summer 2011, it is predicted, Northern Virginia could be facing blackouts due to its growing demand for energy. Should Congress intervene now to prevent that possibility, and if so, what is the most important single step it could take?

The most important step Congress can take is allowing the Commonwealth and the people of Virginia to pursue all the solutions we can to address our energy crisis. The federal government needs to stop legislation and practices that restrict the development of safe and environmentally friendly alternative energy sources.

What impact does immigration have on your district?

Immigration has a big and positive impact on the 8th district. Immigrants strengthen our local and national economies by setting up small businesses in the area and filling the job needs of local businesses, especially given the demand for highly educated workers. Not only do they contribute to the area by filling jobs and shopping at local businesses, but they also enrich our lives by bringing their experiences to the district.

What steps, if any, should the federal government take to address funding issues for transportation projects?

We are in a unique position due to the multi-jurisdictional impact of any project and the large number of federal employees who use our transportation system. We must ensure that the 8th district and Virginia get their fair share of federal transportation money. The federal government should ensure that there has been competitive bidding on any project they will fund to ensure that the taxpayers get a fair price and to reduce government waste.
