What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

Our city's most urgent challenge is holding down the residential real estate tax rate. To do that, we need to invite and carefully consider all proposals for commercial and mixed-use redevelopment along routes 7 and 29. Smart modernization on our main highways will help us expand our revenue base, easing the tax burden on individual property owners. Thoughtful redevelopment will enable us to maintain high-quality affordable housing, expand recreational opportunities, protect and enhance park lands and open space, and ensure our future as a strong, prosperous and independent city.

Why should voters elect you?

I will bring a fresh perspective. I've served three years on the parks and recreation board and want to keep giving back to this community.

What steps, if any, should your county take to mitigate the affects of a slowing economy?

Council must look closely at spending on all City services and staff, emphasize the need for efficiency and frugality in government, and work closely with the School Board to ensure that budgets are tight.

In March, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled the transportation package passed by lawmakers last year unconstitutional, endangering major projects across the region. What steps, if any, should the county, region and state take to address funding issues for transportation projects?

We in the City need to encourage state leaders to fix the transportation funding problem by establishing a dedicated source of revenues to make necessary improvements.
