What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

Our biggest challenge is ensuring the economic sustainability of our independent city and our outstanding small school system. Council must make sound economic development choices in order to broaden our tax base and provide a reliable future revenue stream that does not rely overmuch on residential taxpayers. We share with other jurisdictions the problems of affordable housing and transportation. We must continue to develop affordable housing for our employees who want to live here and for our citizens who wish to remain in the city. Transportation problems require a comprehensive solution formulated by regional and state leaders.

Why should voters elect you?

I am committed to the sustainability of Falls Church as an independent city, with our excellent schools, friendly neighborhoods, and our open, accessible government.

What steps, if any, should your county take to mitigate the affects of a slowing economy?

With the slowing economy, government leaders must make sound economic choices and wise budgetary decisions. Present and future needs must be carefully considered. It will take strong leadership to navigate the rough economic waters.

In March, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled the transportation package passed by lawmakers last year unconstitutional, endangering major projects across the region. What steps, if any, should the county, region and state take to address funding issues for transportation projects?

The Virginia Legislature and the Governor must develop a solution. Richmond cannot continue to pass this problem on to local governments.
